Noisy Furnace? Get It Fixed!

person-with-hands-over-ears-and-distressed-face

Rattle, clatter, boom, oh, my! What is all that racket? If unexpected noises are coming from your heating system, you need to schedule service. It’s quite common for a noise to be the first sign that something is wrong, and you need repairs for your noisy furnace in Haslett. Don’t ignore strange sounds from your heating system. A prompt fix can save you from lots of trouble and expense.

Boom

This is a sound that a gas-burning heating system might make. If you listen closely, you can hear a whoosh before the boom. It sounds like a propane barbecue grill being lit. This can happen when the furnace releases too much fuel before the ignition system makes a spark. Chances are, it’s your ignition that needs a bit of repair.

Rattle

Is something clattering around inside there? If so, a heating repair is the only way to ensure that it gets tightened back into position instead of coming loose and crashing into other components, causing worse trouble. A qualified HVAC technician can check on all the moving parts and make sure everything is firmly secured.

 Buzz

A buzz may be caused by the same sort of looseness that can cause a clatter, only in the earliest stages of a screw loosening. If there’s just a tiny amount of space between components, the system’s vibration can create a buzz. However, this could also be the sound of an electrical issue that puts you at risk for electric shock and even fire, so have it addressed immediately.

Click

Clicking can be caused by electrical issues, too, so it is also a more serious concern than you might imagine for such a small noise. Another hazardous issue that can cause clicking in a gas furnace is a crack in the heat exchanger. This component keeps the combustion gasses (and thus the carbon monoxide) out of the air you breathe. Don’t take any risks! Get repairs immediately.

Whistle

This is more likely to come from your ducts than the heating system itself. Whistling is caused by air being forced through a small opening. If there are openings in the ducts, your precious heated air is being wasted. Don’t pay extra for heat you don’t get to enjoy. Depending on your type of heating system, it may also be caused by a loose seal.

Use Your Intuition

While we can list a variety of sounds your heating system shouldn’t make, the most important thing to know is what it sounds like when it’s running smoothly. For example, right after you’ve gotten heating maintenance, you will know that it’s operating exactly as it should. Listen to the sounds it makes. It’s probably just a low hum and a whir or whoosh.

Any time you hear a different, new, sudden, or unexpected sound, consider it a warning from your furnace. Contact us for a repair appointment!
